AC Breakdown? How to Stay Cool Until Repair Technicians Arrive
The heat seems to show no signs of abating here in Phoenix, with days that still crest over 100°F. Your air conditioner has probably not received much of a break and has worked continuously for months. As you might imagine, this can end up creating major troubles for the system because of the intense wear and tear. Even with maintenance done in spring to prepare for the summer, an air conditioner may abruptly break down on you because of all this strain.
Our technicians are here to help you with fast air conditioning repairs, but you’ll still have a period without AC until we arrive. Here are some tips to beat the heat until the repairs are finished:
1. A fan blowing over ice cubes
This is a fast way to create your own evaporative cooler. Take ice cubes out of the freezer, put them in a bowl, and then place a fan, such as a desk fan, behind them. The air that blows over the ice will lose heat and provide you with a cool breeze.
2. Cover all windows
You want to keep as much radiant heat out of your house as possible, so close all shutters and pull down the blinds.
3. Drink lots of fluids
Keeping your body hydrated is one of the most effective ways to keep cool. In general, focusing on your own body temperature low instead of that in your house is a good idea, so consider taking a cold bath or applying cold cloths to your neck and wrists.
4. Turn off all unnecessary incandescent lights
Incandescent lights generate heat as they run, so turn off any that you don’t need. (During the day, this should be all of them.)
5. Go to the movies!
This was the old way that people kept cool in the days before home ACs were common. If someone else is waiting at home to meet the technicians, go watch a movie in an air-conditioned theater.
