Not Your Daddy’s Electric Fireplace
The Fire Place by Magic Touch has been installing, remodeling, and repairing fireplaces for over 1/4 century. Until just a few years ago the majority of those projects were for natural gas, propane, or wood fireplaces. However, for several years now the popularity of the electric fireplace and electric inserts has skyrocketed. It’s no surprise when you consider just how good an electric fireplace looks now as compared to even just a decade ago.
People that haven’t seen a new high-tech electric fireplace recently are always surprised when they do. In fact, some are so realistic people have to touch the cool glass to believe it. Being members of the HPBA (Hearth, Patio, & Barbecue Association), we attend the country’s largest fireplace show every year. It’s a chance to view all of the new fireplaces, fire pits, hearths, and other products being introduced by manufacturers. Every year we see more and more electric fireplaces in all shapes and sizes. At the most recent show we saw no less than one hundred on display. Even we had to go take a better look at a few!
Electric fireplaces have a few advantages over their gas & wood burning counterparts including the ability to have a fire without heat. Of course, most models do produce heat as well but with an electric fireplace you decide if you want it or not. Other features unique to the electric fireplace include multi-colored flames, little-to-no maintenance is needed, and they can be installed virtually anywhere.
Linear Electric Fireplace
By far, the most popular style today is the Linear Electric Fireplace. Linear electric fireplaces take their name from their long rectangular shape. They’re available in many different lengths including a few models that are 10 feet long! Another cool feature about linear electric fireplaces is the ability to change the look inside the fireplace with the many media options available. The model in the photo above is viewable from 3 sides and includes a mix of glass and driftwood media. It includes not just multiple color flames and LED lighting capabilities, but the ability to change the flame pattern. Above, the flame is chose to mimic the flame pattern of a gas fireplace. We’d say they nailed it!
Conventional / Traditional
If the contemporary style of a linear electric fireplace isn’t what you’re looking for, not to fear. There are dozens of traditional square fireplaces with and without wood logs to match almost any room style. Conventional (square) electric fireplaces and electric fireplace inserts are a great option if you’re looking to remodel an existing masonry wood-burning fireplace or even built-in gas fireplace. It’s a popular choice in Arizona for homeowners that no longer want the hassle of wood and the cleaning involved.
Repairs and relining of an older masonry fireplace and chimney can get expensive. Installing an electric fireplace insert in the old firebox is a great option for those with smaller remodel budgets. With hundreds of trim options and finishes available, nobody ever needs to know it was once a wood-burning fireplace!
