Gas Log Sets & Fireplaces
Gas Log Sets & Fireplaces: Vented vs. Vent-Free Gas Log Sets, Gas Inserts, Electric Fireplace Inserts, Direct Vent Gas Fireplaces & More
Fireplaces are a timeless centerpiece for homes, offering warmth, comfort, and style. But with so many options—vented gas logs, vent-free gas logs, gas inserts, direct vent fireplaces, and electric fireplaces—it can be overwhelming to choose the best fit for your space. I created this guide to help people understand gas log sets & fireplaces and clear up the confusion on why there are so many different types.
In our latest YouTube video, filmed at The Fire Place by Magic Touch showroom in downtown Mesa, AZ, I (Rich Morgan, NFI Certified Hearth Design Specialist) dive deep into the world of fireplaces, breaking down everything you need to know. In this article, I’ll highlight key points from the video and explore how these options can enhance your home.
Understanding Gas Log Sets
Gas log sets are a popular alternative to traditional wood-burning fireplaces. They offer the beauty of a natural fire without the mess or maintenance of wood. But which type is right for you?
Vented Gas Log Sets
- Pros: Realistic flame appearance mimics a traditional wood-burning fire and works with an existing chimney.
- Cons: Heat output is lower because much of the heat escapes through the vent.
- Best For: Aesthetic-focused homeowners with a functional chimney.
Vent-Free Gas Log Sets
- Pros: Higher heat efficiency, no need for a chimney, and lower installation costs.
- Cons: Produces moisture and potential odors; not ideal for small, enclosed spaces.
- Best For: Heating-focused homeowners without a working chimney.
Gas Log Sets vs. Other Fireplace Options
During the video filmed in our fireplace showroom, I compare gas log sets with direct vent fireplaces, gas inserts, and even electric inserts. Here’s what you need to know:
Direct Vent Fireplaces
Direct Vent fireplaces are sealed systems with an exterior vent, making them highly efficient and safe. Our showroom showcases several direct vent gas fireplaces. In the video we look at both the Montigo DelRay Square & Montigo DelRay Linear, which offer customizable liners and media options, as well as Cool Wall technology. This feature allows you to safely mount a TV or artwork above the fireplace without worrying about heat damage.
Gas Inserts
Designed to retrofit into an existing wood-burning fireplace, gas inserts are efficient and clean-burning. They’re ideal for homeowners looking to modernize their fireplace without extensive remodeling. If a gas fireplace was installed when your home was originally built, it’s likely not a gas insert. Many people confuse the term gas insert with a built-in fireplace, a.k.a., zero-clearance gas fireplace. Unless your gas fireplace is in a traditional masonry chimney, it’s most likely a built-in fireplace.
The reason it’s important to know the difference between a fireplace insert and builtin fireplace is:
- You’ll have many more options to choose from when replacing a builtin fireplace vs a gas insert.
- As builtin fireplaces require new venting (in most cases), you’ll need a bigger budget than when replacing an insert.
- Conversely, if you’re replacing a fireplace insert, you can expect a lower project cost and faster replacement.
Electric Inserts
Electric inserts like the Modern Flames Orion Traditional Electric Fireplace provide a sleek, modern aesthetic. They’re easy to install and maintain, with trim kits that cater to various design preferences. Unlike gas fireplace options, electric fireplace inserts don’t require venting or gas lines.

Customization: Make Your Fireplace Yours
Customization is a major benefit of modern fireplaces. At The Fire Place, you’ll find endless ways to tailor your fireplace to fit your style and needs:
- Media Options: Combine driftwood logs with pebbles and stones for a unique look, as featured in our Montigo DelRay Linear Fireplace.
- Surrounds: Choose from stacked stone, stone slab veneers, or acoustic wall panels to complete the look.
