SRP and APS Offer Duct Test and Repair Rebates For Fixing Leaky Ducts!

If you ask most homeowners what they think of when they think about saving energy at home, one of the most common answers is replacing traditional light bulbs with more efficient CFL bulbs.

While that is a great place to start, most people overlook one of the biggest energy wasters in their homes…and it’s right above our heads!

Leaks in your central air conditioning and heating system’s ducts are huge energy hogs. And fixing them can yield one of the most significant and quickest returns on investment of any energy saving repair you can make!

In a homeowner’s information booklet put out by the utility company APS (Arizona Public Service), titled; A Consumer’s Guide To An Energy Efficient Air Conditioning System, there are some interesting facts about some of their findings in independent case studies. Here is an excerpt from that guide:

Leaks in air ducts can also rob an air conditioning system of its efficiency, comfort, and capacity. While you can’t see duct leaks, your contractor can detect them by conducting an analysis of your system. An APS study found that duct system leakage can be as high as 34% of the airflow rate of the system –– over one-third of its cooling capacity! A properly installed system should have a leakage rate of only about 3% to 5% of system airflow. Duct leakage can be most severe in ducts installed in attics. When it’s 110 degrees F outside, the attic can reach temperatures as high as 160 degrees F. This hot air can be drawn directly into the air conditioning system through the ductwork.

By reducing duct leakage, you may be able to save up to 14% on the cooling portion of your energy bill compared to a typical home.

Fortunately, there is an inexpensive and quick way to detect air duct leakage commonly referred to as a “Duct Blast Test” and we have provided some more information about duct testing on our website. Even better news is that both Arizona power companies (SRP and APS) offer rebates that not only make the testing affordable (under $100), they also help make fixing duct leaks affordable with rebates of up to $250! This rebate program is called, SRP Duct Test and Repair Rebate or APS Duct Test and Repair Rebate.

So the answer to the question; Are central air-conditioning duct leaks stealing your money, is YES! But the good news is you can do something about it and afford to eat out a few more times a month!
