Air Scrubber Plus Review 2017

A Review of the Air Scrubber Plus From Someone Who Owns Three of Them.

This is part two of the Air Scrubber Plus review. The original article was written in April of 2014, and was not so much of a review, as it was a testimonial from myself, and not as the owner of Magic Touch Mechanical, but as the owner of three Air Scrubber Plus units. We have two of these units installed in our offices in Mesa, and the other in my home. In the first article, I talked about how I could sneak a smoke in the house without my wife knowing I did.

I thought a follow up was in order as we have now had the Air Scrubber Plus installed in three different air conditioning and heating systems for 3-1/2 years. If you visit the Air Scrubber Plus website they boast about the NASA technology, blah, blah, blah. Most people don’t want to know how the sausage is made, they want to know if it tastes good…or in this case, does it work?

Does the Air Scrubber Plus Really Eliminate Bad Odors?

First things first, as I discussed in my testimonial, not only does this unit work as advertised, it exceeded all my expectations when it comes to eliminating odors. Cigarette smoke, fried food smells, that mac and cheese bowl that sat in the sink too long…it’s a powerhouse at making odors disappear.

It’s important to note that odor elimination is a feature that only the ozone-producing model will achieve well. The non-ozone producing model will most likely have the same results. Not to say the non-ozone model does not provide benefits, and is probably a better solution for those with known lung diseases and similar respiratory issues – I just wouldn’t count on the odor elimination on those models.

Will the Air Scrubber Plus Really Reduce Dust in my Home?

We were told by the manufacturer representative, and now we tell Magic Touch clients, that for the first few weeks after installing the Air Scrubber Plus to expect more dust on surfaces like tables and countertops, but after that time to expect less dust going forward.

That was my exact experience. The additional dust on surfaces at first is really confirmation the unit doing its job. Its job is to eliminate dust and contaminants from the air and surfaces. In laymen terms, the dust normally floating around in the air will be cling to the scrubbers and fall to surfaces. Again, I’m not going to get “techie” in this post, but you can read all about the process on the manufacturers website. Since this is a review, I can say without a doubt that for the last few years, since the scrubbers were installed, there is undoubtedly less dust.

Does the Air Scrubber Plus Help People with Allergies?

As a fellow allergy sufferer, I would not mess around on this topic…allergies suck! I have dealt with allergies and all the associated miserableness ever since I moved to Arizona in the early nineties. I can testify to the fact that for the last few years I have not suffered through allergy season the way I did in the past. I attribute that directly to the air scrubber.

The Air Scrubber Plus Website Claims it Will Keep my AC Unit Cleaner, is That True?

As the owner of an air conditioning company in Arizona, I make my living maintaining heating and cooling systems. I also practice what I preach and maintain my units twice a year without skipping a beat. Full disclosure, I have one of our service technician’s do it (picture me smiling right now). I can testify that my evaporator coils stay much cleaner now than they did before they were installed.

The dirtier your evap. coil is, the more it costs to have it cleaned. It’s really a simple equation (more labor + more chemical = more $). An air conditioner with dirty coils and dirty blower wheels & motors run hotter, and pull higher amps, costing more to operate. Lastly, motors and compressors that are pulling higher amps than they are rated to handle don’t last are destined to fail. So, it stands to reason that lower operating costs, reduced maintenance costs, and the longevity of expensive components will help pay for the initial investment of an air scrubber.

If I Install an Air Scrubber Do I Still Need to Change My Air Filters?

When I’m talking about indoor air quality with a client, I separate it into two buckets. In bucket one we have air purification, this is the bucket an air scrubber goes into. The other bucket is air filtration. Filtration requires some type of media to catch and trap dust, pollen, and other contaminants. You absolutely still need filtration with an air scrubber. I always recommend running pleated filters with a high MERV rating – but, it’s important to mention your duct system needs to be properly installed and have a low static pressure to run a high MERV filter or you can do harm to your HVAC System. (This is a topic for another article).

The Bottom Line

From my own personal use of the product, I give the Air Scrubber Plus 5 out of 5 Stars.

This is not a paid endorsement, I purchased my air scrubbers (albeit at wholesale pricing, but I purchased them nonetheless). I should also mention that my company sells and installs other air purification products and also have the Lennox PCO purification device in another one of my AC units…in other words there is no bias here.
